Booking guide
Hotel concierge or direct? An honest comparison for luxury car rental in Portugal.
If you're staying at a high-end Portugal hotel, your concierge can arrange a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Rolls-Royce for you. They're very good at it. They also add a commission to the price — typically 15-25%. Here's when that markup is worth paying, and when it isn't.
Direct booking
You contact the rental company. You see their actual price.
- — Same fleet
- — Same delivery to your hotel
- — Direct line to a named concierge (founder Sergey or COO Diogo)
- — No middleman markup
- — Faster decisions on changes / upgrades
Through the hotel concierge
You ask concierge. They quote you a price they got from us plus their commission.
- — Same fleet (it's ours)
- — Same delivery to your hotel
- — Concierge as intermediary for communication
- — Markup of 15-25% on the rental cost
- — Useful if you need everything booked through the hotel for billing
A worked example
A Ferrari Purosangue for 5 days direct: €2,500/day × 5 = €12,500. Same booking through a hotel concierge with a 20% markup: €15,000 — a €2,500 difference. For a week-long Algarve trip, that's roughly the cost of an extra spa day for two people, or a Michelin lunch, or upgrading the room one tier.
The car you receive is identical. The valet hand-over is identical. The contract you sign is the same. The only thing that changes is where the €2,500 lands.
When the concierge is worth it
Genuinely: when you don't want to deal with the booking yourself. If you're on a five-star holiday and the point is not to think about logistics, the markup is a price for time and attention. That's a reasonable trade for some travellers. We don't begrudge concierges making this margin — they've earned the trust of their guest, and the price reflects that.
But if you'd rather have that €2,500 back in your trip budget — and if you're already comfortable sending a WhatsApp — book direct.
Frequently asked
- Why is a hotel concierge's price higher than the rental company's direct price?
- Most concierges take a commission — typically 15-25% on luxury car rentals. The rental company quotes the concierge their net price; the concierge adds a markup and quotes you. You see the marked-up price; the rental company sees their original net. This is industry standard and not hidden from us; we just don't see what the concierge added on top.
- Is there ever a reason to pay the concierge markup?
- Yes — three of them. (1) If you don't speak English/Portuguese and the concierge handles communication. (2) If you're using hotel credit or expense-report coding that requires everything booked through the property. (3) If the concierge has a strong relationship with the rental company and can negotiate things you couldn't — late returns, specific delivery times, special arrangements. None of these apply to most leisure travellers.
- Will the hotel mind if I book direct?
- No. We deliver to and from hotels daily. The valets at Conrad Algarve, Anantara Vilamoura, Vila Vita Parc, Bairro Alto Hotel, and the Four Seasons Ritz all know us. Drop-offs and pickups are handled at the valet stand exactly as if the booking had gone through the hotel — without the markup.
- How do I tell the hotel I have my own car coming?
- Just message your concierge with the date, time, and rental company. "DeluxeDrive will deliver a Ferrari 296 GTS to the hotel at 2pm on Saturday — please advise valet." That's it. They'll thank you for the heads-up. Most hotels charge no parking fee for a guest's rental car for the duration of the stay.
- Can a hotel concierge get me a car I can't book direct?
- Almost never. Every supercar in Portugal that a concierge can arrange comes from a small number of licensed rental companies — including ours. The concierge calls the same companies you can email. If a specific car isn't available to you direct, it's not available to them either.
- What about insurance and damage liability — same protection?
- Same — possibly better when you book direct. The rental contract is between you and DeluxeDrive (the licensed rental company), governing insurance, damage waiver, and excess. When booked via a concierge, you sign the same contract. The concierge isn't in the liability chain; they're just a middleman.
- I'm a high-net-worth guest used to concierge bookings. What changes if I book direct?
- You get the same service from the same people, with one named concierge from our side rather than a hotel intermediary. Our founder Sergey or COO Diogo personally handle VIP bookings — same discretion, same delivery protocols, faster decisions because we're not relaying through a chain.
