Trip planning

Algarve or Lisbon — where to base your luxury car rental in Portugal?

Both regions are extraordinary in their own way. Algarve is open coast, motorway cruising, and unhurried golf-resort days. Lisbon is dense urban character with spectacular half-day drives to Sintra, Cascais, and Cabo da Roca. The right choice depends on the kind of trip you're actually going to have.

The driver's coastline

Algarve

  • A22 motorway: 130 km east-west, the cleanest stretch of road in Portugal
  • EN125: scenic interior corridor with golf-resort access
  • N247 to Cabo de São Vicente: empty, dramatic, photo-perfect
  • Delivery included to Faro Airport, hotels, villas, golf resorts
  • Sweet spot: 3-7 day rental

The city-and-coast combo

Lisbon

  • A5 to Cascais: 28 km, fast, scenic finish along the marina
  • N247 coastal to Cabo da Roca: 35 km of cliff-top drama
  • IC30 / N9 to Sintra: tighter, atmospheric, perfect for cabrios
  • Delivery €276 RT (often waived on 4+ day flagship rentals)
  • Sweet spot: 2-4 day rental, used for excursions not city driving

When to pick the Algarve

You want a base for a week. You're bringing a partner, maybe two friends. The driving is part of the holiday, not just a way to get places. You like the idea of morning beach, midday lunch on a marina, afternoon golf, evening drive along the coast as the light goes amber. The Algarve is built for that pace, and DeluxeDrive is based here — meaning faster swaps, faster support, faster everything.

When to pick Lisbon

You're combining business with leisure, or you want city stays alongside driving. Two or three days, supercar parked at the hotel, used for the Cascais day-trip and the Sintra evening. Lisbon doesn't reward all-day driving — the city is dense and parking is real work. But the half-day excursions out of it are among the best on the Iberian peninsula.

The trick most people miss

Combine them. Three days Algarve, drive up the A2 (yourself, in the supercar — it's a great drive), drop the car off in Lisbon at the hotel, fly home from LIS. The one-way fee (€350) is less than the cost of an unused half-day. About 20% of our multi-region customers do this.

Frequently asked

Which region has better roads for a Ferrari or Lamborghini?
Different kinds. The Algarve has the A22 motorway plus coastal roads like the N247 toward Cabo de São Vicente — long, sweeping, photogenic. Lisbon offers the N247 coast road toward Cabo da Roca and the A5 to Cascais, plus IC30 toward Sintra — short hops with dramatic scenery. The Algarve rewards days at a time. Lisbon rewards memorable half-days.
Is delivery cheaper to Algarve or Lisbon?
Algarve delivery is included with every DeluxeDrive rental — Faro Airport, hotels, villas, golf resorts all delivered at no charge. Lisbon delivery is €276 (round trip from our Almancil base). For trips of 4+ days the Lisbon delivery fee is usually waived for the higher-tier vehicles.
Which region has better photo locations?
Honest answer: both are exceptional but for different aesthetics. The Algarve gives you cliffs (Praia da Marinha, Benagil), wide beaches, and golden sunsets over the Atlantic — dramatic and uncrowded. Lisbon gives you architecture (Belém, Estoril), the N247 coastal stretch, and Cascais marina — urban-meets-coastal. For Instagram, the Algarve is harder to mess up.
Where can I drive my supercar more freely?
The Algarve. Traffic is lighter outside of August, the A22 is open and well-surfaced, and golf resorts have dedicated supercar-friendly arrival lanes. Lisbon city traffic and one-way street systems make driving in the centre slow — supercars are better used for excursions to Sintra, Cascais, or down the coast rather than urban commuting.
Which has better hotels for arriving in a Ferrari?
Both have exceptional options. Algarve: Conrad Algarve, Anantara Vilamoura, Vila Vita Parc, Quinta do Lago resorts. Lisbon: Four Seasons Ritz Lisboa, Bairro Alto Hotel, Lisbon Avenida Palace. We've done supercar handovers to all of these — most have valet services that know our team by name.
How long should I rent for in each region?
Algarve: 3-7 days is the sweet spot — enough to enjoy multiple coastal drives + golf + dinners. Lisbon: 2-4 days, because the supercar gets the most use on day trips (Sintra, Cascais, Setúbal) rather than city driving. Couples often combine both: 3 days Algarve, 2 days Lisbon, with a one-way rental between.
Can I rent in one and drop off in the other?
Yes. One-way rentals between Algarve and Lisbon are available with a €350 transfer fee. Best routed via the A2 motorway (2h45m drive). Many of our customers do an Algarve-Lisbon one-way to combine a beach trip with a city stay.
